The Verbe - Bitter Sweet Symphony

The Verve (originalmente Verve) fue una banda británica de rock alternativo formada en Wigan (Inglaterra) en 1989. Al inicio, esta banda estaba compuesta por Richard Ashcroft (vocalista), Nick McCabe (guitarrista), Simon Jones (bajista) y Peter Salisbury (batería). Simon Tong se incorporó posteriormente como guitarrista.


Bitter Sweet Symphony (Sinfonía agridulce), escrita por Richard Ashcroft, fue lanzada el 16 de junio de 1997. Esta canción tiene un significado profundo que se puede deducir analizando su video: el protagonista camina decidido, en dirección contraria a los demás (pero hay más gente como él), se da presencia (nadie lo detiene), tiene poder en la mirada y el movimiento, y al final del video lo acompaña el resto del grupo (no va solo). Estas son algunas de las ideas respecto al vídeo. Centrémonos ahora en la letra de la canción:

“Porque esta vida es una sinfonía agridulce”

Es una forma de describir la vida como un contraste entre desgracias y tragedias, y felicidad y cosas positivas. De ahí que sea agria y dulce al mismo tiempo.

“Haciendo que los extremos se encuentren, eres un esclavo del dinero y entonces mueres”

El dinero nos hace esclavos, y después morimos. Nos preocupamos por cosas irrelevantes (como el dinero) y nos olvidamos de vivir (disfrutar la vida), y cuando nos damos cuenta, ya no nos queda tiempo.

“No cambio, puedo cambiar, pero estoy aquí en mi molde…”

“Y soy un millón de personas diferentes…”

No quiere cambiar, no quiere ser como los demás, quiere seguir su propio camino. No hace el camino solo, hay más personas como él.


En conclusión, esta canción nos quiere decir que disfrutemos de la vida sin preocuparnos por cosas irrelevantes y que seamos libres de decidir lo que queremos, sin dejarnos influenciar por nada o por nadie.

The Verve (originally Verve) was an alternative rock British band formed in Wigan (England) in 1989. At the beginning, the band consisted of Richard Ashcroft (singer), Nick McCabe (guitarrist), Simon Jones (bassist) and Peter Salisbury (drummer). Later, Simon Tong joined to the band as guitarrist.

Bitter Sweet Symphony, written by Richard Ashcroft, was released on 16th June of 1997. This song has a deep meaning which can be deduced by analizing the video: the protagonist is decided, he walks in the opposite direction to the others (but there are more people like him), he is given presence (no one stops him), he has power over the eyes and movement, and at the end of the video he is with the rest of the group (he is not alone). These are some of the ideas respect of the video. Let us focus on the lyrics of the song:

"Cause it's a bitter sweet symphony this life"

It is a way of describing life as a contrast between misfortunes and tragedies, and happiness and positive things. So, it is sour and sweet at the same time.

"Trying to make ends meet, you are a slave to the money, then you die"

Money make us slaves, and then we die. We care about irrelevant things  (like money) and we forget to live (enjoy life), and when we realize we have no time.

"No change, I can change but I'm here in my mold..."

"And I'm a million different people..."

He doesn't want to change, he doesn't want to be like others, he wants to follow his own path. He is not alone on the road, there are more people like him.

In conclusion, this song means that we should enjoy life without worrying about irrelevant things and we are free to decide what we want, without being influenced by anything or anyone.
